ECMP Calculator
Estimate Equal-Cost Multi-Path traffic distribution and simulate deterministic per-flow path selection using common L3/L4 hash fields.
Client-side calculation
1. Distribution Calculator
Estimate ideal distribution when multiple equal-cost next hops are available.
2. Flow Hash Simulator
Map a sample flow to one ECMP path. This is an educational simulation; vendor hash algorithms differ.
3. Multi-Flow Distribution Simulator
Generate a set of synthetic flows to visualize how a deterministic hash spreads sessions across equal-cost paths.
How ECMP Works
Step 1A router learns two or more routes to the same destination with equal routing cost.
Step 2Those next hops are installed as an ECMP group, subject to platform limits and routing policy.
Step 3A hash commonly derived from source/destination IP, ports, protocol, and sometimes additional fields selects a path.
Step 4Per-flow hashing usually keeps packets in the same flow on one path, reducing packet reordering.
Important: This tool models ECMP behavior for learning and planning. Actual path selection can differ by vendor, platform, software release, routing protocol, hash seed, encapsulation, symmetry settings, and resilient-hashing implementation.
