How to Read RTT

RTTGeneral Interpretation
< 20 msVery low latency, commonly seen on nearby LAN/datacenter paths.
20–50 msGood latency for many interactive applications.
50–100 msUsable, but delay may become noticeable for real-time applications.
100–200 msHigher latency; voice, gaming and interactive sessions may be affected.
> 200 msSignificant latency. Investigate distance, routing, congestion, tunnels or processing delays.

Important: RTT is not always exactly twice the one-way delay because forward and return paths can differ. The one-way estimate shown here simply uses RTT Γ· 2.

Example Troubleshooting Flow

  1. Collect multiple ping or application RTT samples.
  2. Compare minimum, average and maximum RTT.
  3. Check jitter to see how much delay changes between packets.
  4. Review packet loss together with latency.
  5. Compare results from different hops, paths, VPN states or times of day.
