File Size Converter

Convert file sizes between Bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB and binary KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB units. You can also select a local file to detect its size without uploading it.

Detect size of a local file

Select a file from your computer. The browser reads the file metadata locally; the file is not intentionally uploaded by this tool.

Visual size chart

Bars use logarithmic scaling so large differences remain readable.

Always use the numeric value for exact comparison; the bar length is only a visual aid.

KB vs KiB β€” why file sizes sometimes look different

1 KB = 1,000 bytes

KB is a decimal SI unit. Storage vendors commonly use decimal values.

1 KiB = 1,024 bytes

KiB is a binary IEC unit based on powers of 1024.

1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes

Decimal megabyte: 1,000 KB.

1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes

Binary mebibyte: 1,024 KiB.

Practical examples

Small text file

50 KB β‰ˆ 48.83 KiB

Photo

5 MB β‰ˆ 4.77 MiB

Video

2 GB β‰ˆ 1.86 GiB

Disk image

100 GB β‰ˆ 93.13 GiB

1 GiB exactly

1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes

1 GB exactly

1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes

Important: File-size conversion does not change or compress a file. It only expresses the same number of bytes using different units. Filesystem allocation, compression, sparse files, cloud-provider billing, and operating-system display conventions can make reported disk usage differ from the file's logical byte size.
