Understanding URL Hash Algorithm and Consistent Hashing for Load Balancing

What is Load balancing algorithms ?

Load balancing algorithms are methods used to distribute incoming network traffic or workloads across multiple servers or resources to ensure that no single server becomes overwhelmed. The goal is to optimize resource use, maximize throughput, minimize response time, and avoid overload on any single resource.

URL Hash Algorithm

Overview – URL Hash Algorithm in Load Balancer

The URL Hash algorithm is a load balancing technique that distributes client requests based on the URL of the incoming request. It uses a hash function to map the URL to a specific server. This ensures that requests for the same URL are consistently routed to the same server, which can be particularly beneficial for caching and session persistence.

How It Works

  1. Request URL: The client sends a request to the load balancer, including the URL of the resource being requested.
  2. Hash Calculation: The load balancer applies a hash function to the URL.
  3. Server Selection: The hash result is used to select one of the available servers.
  4. Request Routing: The load balancer routes the request to the selected server.
  5. Consistency: Subsequent requests for the same URL will produce the same hash result and be routed to the same server.

Detailed Example – URL Hash Algorithm

Consider a scenario with three servers (Server A, Server B, and Server C) and the following URLs:

  • /index.html
  • /about.html
  • /contact.html

When a request for /index.html arrives, the load balancer performs the following steps:

  1. Hash Calculation: The URL /index.html is hashed using a hash function, resulting in a value that maps to Server B.
  2. Request Routing: The load balancer routes the request to Server B.
  3. Subsequent Requests: Any further requests for /index.html will also be routed to Server B, ensuring consistency.

Similarly, requests for /about.html and /contact.html are hashed and routed to the appropriate servers based on the hash results.

Advantages – URL Hash Algorithm

  1. Consistency: Ensures that requests for the same URL are consistently routed to the same server, which can improve caching efficiency and reduce redundant processing.
  2. Session Persistence: Maintains session state for applications that rely on URL-based session information.
  3. Scalability: The algorithm scales well with the number of URLs and servers, as it evenly distributes requests based on the hash results.

Disadvantages – URL Hash Algorithm

  1. Imbalance Risk: If some URLs are much more popular than others, the servers handling those URLs may become overloaded, leading to an imbalance.
  2. Dependency on Hash Function: The effectiveness of the algorithm depends on the quality of the hash function. Poorly designed hash functions can lead to uneven distribution.
  3. Difficulty in Server Changes: Adding or removing servers requires recalculating the hash distribution, which can be complex and disruptive.

Enhanced Versions of URL Hash Algorithm

To address some of the disadvantages, enhanced versions such as Consistent Hashing can be used. Consistent Hashing is a variation that minimizes disruption when servers are added or removed, ensuring a more balanced and stable distribution of requests.

Example of Consistent Hashing

Consistent Hashing works by placing both URLs and servers on a hash ring. When a server is added or removed, only a subset of URLs need to be rehashed, reducing the impact on the overall distribution.

How It Works:

  1. Hash Ring: Both URLs and servers are hashed and placed on a circular hash ring.
  2. Server Assignment: Each URL is assigned to the first server encountered in a clockwise direction on the hash ring.
  3. Server Addition/Removal: When a server is added or removed, only the URLs falling between the affected server’s previous and new positions need to be reassigned.

Detailed Example: Assume we have three servers and URLs distributed on a hash ring:

  • Server A at position 10
  • Server B at position 50
  • Server C at position 90

URLs are hashed and placed on the ring:

  • /index.html at position 20
  • /about.html at position 60
  • /contact.html at position 80

Requests for /index.html will be routed to Server B (next server in a clockwise direction), /about.html to Server C, and /contact.html to Server C.

If a new Server D is added at position 70, only the URL /contact.html needs to be reassigned to Server D, minimizing disruption.

Summary –URL Hash Algorithm

A URL hash, also known as a fragment identifier, is a part of a URL that comes after the # symbol. It is used to point to a specific section or element within a webpage. The content after the # is typically not sent to the server; it’s processed by the browser to navigate or interact with the webpage content.

Example:

Key Points:

  1. Navigation: In HTML, the hash is often used to navigate to an element with a matching id attribute on the page. For example, #section2 scrolls the page to the element <div id=”section2″>.
  2. Single Page Applications (SPAs): In modern web development, especially with SPAs (e.g., React, Angular), URL hashes are used for client-side routing. The URL hash can change dynamically without reloading the page, allowing for different views or states within the same page.
  3. Bookmarking: Users can bookmark a specific section of a page by copying the URL with the hash.

How It Works:

  • The browser looks for an element with the id matching the hash value.
  • If found, the page scrolls to that element or loads content associated with that hash.

URL hashes are a powerful tool for improving user navigation and managing content within dynamic web applications.
